How this is calculated

The estimate follows OPM's basic FERS computation rules:

  • Minimum Retirement Age (MRA) is set by your birth year โ€” from 55 (born before 1948) up to 57 (born 1970 or later).
  • Basic annuity = High-3 ร— years of service ร— multiplier. The multiplier is 1.0%, or 1.1% if you retire at age 62 or older with at least 20 years of service.
  • Special provisions (LEO/FF/ATC/CBPO) use 1.7% on the first 20 years plus 1.0% on years beyond 20.
  • MRA+10 retirements (MRA with 10โ€“29 years) are reduced by 5% for each year you are under age 62 (5/12 of 1% per month).
  • Survivor election reduces your annuity by 5% (partial, 25% survivor) or 10% (full, 50% survivor).
  • The FERS Special Retirement Supplement (paid before age 62 for unreduced MRA+30 / Age 60+20 / special-provision retirees) = Social Security estimate at 62 ร— (years rounded up รท 40).
